L'apéro & the Village Square

In the final workshop in the spring French Village Sketchbook series we'll sketch a classic local apéritif and a view of the village square.

These tutorials are a great way to challenge your observational skills and develop your drawing technique. We will practice ellipses, work with watercolour and sketch a complex composition in a series of basic steps. I may also be talking about 'absinthe' - so you can even sketch some imaginary people too 😉

Previous sketching experience could be useful but is not essential. With photos and guides we will work through every stage of these sketches one section at a time.  I recommend using a simple sketch kit - the items I am using include

  • a sketchbook with paper suitable for watercolour 160gsm+
  • a pencil & eraser
  • a basic set of watercolour paints
  • a medium round watercolour brush & a fine round brush (size 1 or 2 - or a rigger brush)
  • tissue/rag
  • jar of clean water
  • a ruler
  • white gel pen / gouache / acrylic paint

I also use a spare piece of scrap paper and a small spray water bottle.

If you have questions before signing-up for the online class please feel free to email me!

The watercolours I'm using in these videos are those in the workshop starter kit (Winsor&Newton Cotman range) as below
